FAQs
When is workplace mediation helpful?
Workplace mediation works best when conflict is starting to impact morale, productivity, or teamwork but before things escalate into formal grievances or resignations. It’s an early intervention that can save time, money, and relationships.
Who takes part in mediation?
Only the individuals involved in the conflict attend, along with the mediator. HR or management may be involved to make the referral and to receive a summary of any agreements reached (with the participants’ consent).
Is it confidential?
Yes. Confidentiality is a cornerstone of mediation. What is discussed stays between the participants and mediator, unless there’s a serious risk of harm or disclosure is legally required.
What does the process look like?
We typically begin with private meetings (one-to-one) with each participant. Then, if everyone agrees, we hold a joint session to discuss issues, explore options, and work toward a resolution. Agreements are written down and shared with the parties.
How long does it take?
Most workplace mediations can be completed in a single day or two half-day sessions. Complex cases may require more time but mediation is almost always faster than formal investigations or litigation.
What if we can’t agree?
Even without a full agreement, mediation often reduces tension, clarifies issues, and helps everyone communicate better. This makes any next steps (HR processes, performance management, etc.) less adversarial.
Is it legally binding?
Workplace mediation agreements are typically informal but can be incorporated into HR records or performance plans if all parties agree.
Can bullying or harassment be mediated?
Yes, if it is safe and appropriate for everyone involved. Mediation allows behaviour to be addressed and clear expectations set. If there is a risk of harm, a formal investigation may be more suitable.
What are the benefits for organisations?
Mediation can:
- Prevent grievances from escalating
- Reduce staff turnover and absenteeism
- Save costs compared to litigation
- Restore team morale and productivity
- Promote a healthy, collaborative workplace culture
Is mediation voluntary?
Yes. Everyone must agree to take part in good faith. Mediation works because it is collaborative not imposed.
Finding Peace in Conflict
Conflict in the workplace doesn’t have to drain your organisation. With the right mediation, you can turn disputes into opportunities for growth, trust, and collaboration.
